Counting Large Groups

We kicked off our Numbers to 1000 unit yesterday by counting buckets of different items. Each bucket had hundreds of blocks or counters, and each table group had to work together to count their collection. We quickly discovered it was much easier to make groups of 10 items (and then 100 items) at a time in order to count more efficiently.

We also started talking about base ten numbers, which we will be continuing to use for the whole unit. Base Ten means you are breaking the number down into it’s place value pieces. The number 586 as a base ten number would be 5 hundreds, 8 tens and 6 ones.
